We are seeking a Turbomachinery Lab Manager to lead our turbomachinery development and testing lab. The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, and 10 years of experience in turbomachinery testing coupled with strong project management/leadership skills.
Lead and contribute to several turbomachinery testing and design projects. Example prototype projects include fuel pumps for the next-generation rockets, air dynomometers, advanced diffuser technology, reverse Brayton refrigeration systems and more.
Work with a team of world-class experts in turbomachinery and highly capable support staff in other business units.
Apply engineering principles in statics, dynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer, and mechanical design to develop, build, and test experimental hardware, and specialized products.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Collaborate with other engineering staff to design prototype hardware and test facilities.
Schedule and coordinate activities of test engineers and mechanical technicians.
Plan assembly activities and prototype testing.
Assemble and test development and production rigs and equipment.
Develop test plans and procedures, as well as associated DAQ software.
Conduct testing and perform test data analysis.
Complete projects on schedule and within budget.
Required Qualifications and Skills
BS in mechanical engineering or equivalent, MS preferred.
Demonstrated management skills and experience leading technical projects in a R&D prototyping
environment, specifically testing of turbomachinery systems including compressors, turbines, and pumps. Fundamental understanding of turbomachinery principles is a must.
Hands-on experience with building/testing/troubleshooting turbomachinery, including instrumentation and controls. Experience with LabView DAQ software development is highly
Proven track record of managing and leading mechanical engineering staff.
Excellent verbal and written communication and problem-solving skills.
Proven ability to drive change, manage conflict, and achieve results.
Must be US citizen or US permanent resident.

As a manager of the small team of engineers and technicians, you will be responsible for managing the team’s development and performance as a group. However, as a member of the team, you will also
contribute technically by contributing to the design, assembly, and testing of turbomachinery products of our or customers.
Hence, to be successful in this position, you will need to have the following experience and skills:
1. Personally, led and contributed to the planning, assembly and testing of new turbomachinery products. This includes:
a. Develop and maintain specifications and test plans for the new product under development/test within your team.
b. Developing the test facility from concept to completion, working in a cross-functional team to ensure the test approach meets its requirements in a cost-effective manner.
c. Hand calculations in XLS to assess form, fit and function of your design/proposed approach, including but not limited to thermodynamics, heat/mass balance, heat transfer, statics loads, and more. Your understanding of the fundamentals of turbomachinery will
be critical to your success as a leader in the turbomachinery lab.
d. Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting your test facility in collaboration with your team and other engineers within the organization.
e. Conducting turbomachinery testing, including establish system controls and procedures, perform equipment calibration and operate test facilities. Your ability to develop LabView DAQ software will be a major plus.
f. Post-process test results, working with other engineers to evaluate system performance and recommend next steps as needed to ensure the products meets customer
2. Demonstrated the ability to supervise and lead other engineers:
a. Review, monitor and coach your team to raise the bar on technical, cost and schedule performance while maintaining a high degree of excellence in engineering.
b. Performed item 1 a significant number of times, allowing you to teach and mentor other engineers in proper assembly and testing processes / best practices.
c. Manage and maintain testing equipment and tools within your team. Direct experience with instrument calibration is desired but not required.
d. Work with other business leaders towards continuous improvement of your team and laboratory facilities, paving the way towards sustained leadership in turbomachinery for the business.
Items 1 and 2 above have equal weight in your ability to succeed in this position. Additionally, as the turbomachinery lab manager, you need to have a fundamental understanding of aerodynamics in rotating equipment. Course work alone is not sufficient to be successful in leading new product introductions, frequently pushing the limits of the current state of the art.
